Movie Info

Narrated by different people in Murphy a.k.a Barfi’s (Ranbir Kapoor) life, the movie starts with Shruti (Ileana DCruz) and Barfi’s romance. Engaged to be married to her college sweetheart, Shruti moves to Darjeeling with her parents. But here she falls for the charms of the mischievous and loveable Barfi. Barfi may be deaf-and-dumb, but he’s quite a handful for his father and the local policeman (Saurabh Shukla).

There’s also the sort-of-romance between Barfi and Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra). After being hidden away from society by her parents in a special home because of her autism, Jhilmil is brought back when her parents want a share of the grandfather’s heritage. While dealing with Jhilmil proves increasingly difficult for her parents, Barfi knows to handle her well and genuinely cares for her.

Their paths intertwine in somewhat complicated ways with a journey to Calcutta, a bank robbery and a more-sweet-than-bitter love triangle.

  • The strength of the film is the nonlinear narration, raising your anticipation levels and making you curious about how the story is going to unfold. Barfi! starts off rather slowly, but 15 minutes into the film and the leisurely pace of storytelling becomes pleasurable. The entry of Jhilmil adds a new dimension to the story, and the plot begins to pick up.

  • The reason these characters infiltrate the depths of your emotions is their respective actors’ performances. This is Ileana’s first film but her fantastic performance is just a testament why the Telugu audience consider her a superstar. Of course it also helps that she is the most appealing visual in Barfi! out shining even the scenic hills of Darjeeling. Ranbir Kapoor has proved he’s the actor in town. And Barfi is one more addition to the films we’ll remember him for.

  • Anurag Basu makes a mature, evenly-paced film, lovingly detailed, with warm fuzzy layers and golden hues. Its Chaplinesque overtones add humour and wit to a story which could so easily have been just maudlin. The only problem with this film is its constant and incoherent time switches. The flashbacks are disjointed and it’s difficult to figure out what is happening when in the film.

  • On the whole, BARFI! is unusual for Bollywood. You don't formulate movies like BARFI! targeting its box-office potential or its commercial prospects. You create such films for the passion of cinema. Also, the viewer needs to savor Ranbir, Priyanka and Ileana's paramount performances, one of the strengths of this movie. Strongly recommended!
